How to Ride a Bike
Riding a bike takes balance and experience. Although difficult at first progress is usually fast if you go about it the right way.
- You have to learn to balance the bike. This must become an unconscious act, indeed it is almost impossible to perform this 'trick' consciously.
- The bike is balanced by turning the handlebars left and right. If you are falling to the left you turn to the left and if falling to the right turn to the right.
- Generally these movements are very slight and made so early in the overbalancing process that they are almost unnoticable.
- First lower the seat until you can sit on it and put both feet flat on the floor.
- Sitting on the bike make sure you know where the brakes are and how to operate them - you will want to stop at some point.
- Push your self forwards with one foot at a time. you can easily put your feet down for balance and will quickly achieve a sense of what is happening. your normal body balance will dictate the actions of your hands.
- When you are confident you can put your feet on the peddles and coast for a few feet.
- When you fell it is OK try peddling for a short distance, you can always put your feet down. Don't try to go too fast.
- PRACTICE.
- Find a safe open area to practice on away from traffic.
- Don't worry if you take some time to get used to the motion and balance, keep working with your feet as this is a stable situation and will get you going fastest.
- Personally I don't like trainer wheels, I don't think they teach you to balance.
- Some people remove the peddles during the early stages so they don't catch their legs on them.
- It will take a couple of days to learn. be patient.
- Avoid traffic until completely confident.
