How to Change a Car Engine

Here are some instructions on removing as well as installing a car engine. You can do it, but know that it is a lot of work. If you can afford it, get a shop to do it. If not, read on.

  1. Read everything first.
  2. Position vehicle to here you can get the hoist in as well as out on the level. You will need to drain fluids. Plenty of lighting is necessary. Take pictures of everything under the hood.
  3. Remove the hood. The hinges bolt to the hood. Mark the hinges with a sharpie or a sharp point scribe around the hinge so you can locate it later. Loosen carefully so you don't scrape when the hood slides. Lift off with a friend if possible.
  4. Drain coolant as well as disconnect hoses. NOTE: cut off hoses that don't come easy; you can replace rubber, but metal connectors can be damaged as well as harder to replace.
  5. Remove fan. Loosen alternator or tension pulley as well as remove belts. Remove radiator.
  6. Disconnect the intake air supply as well as fuel lines.
  7. Unbolt as well as pull aside the power steering pump as well as air conditioning compressor; don't disconnect the hoses.
  8. Remove all electric wire connections to the motor. Spark plug wires can be left for later.
  9. Disconnect the exhaust manifold(s).
  10. Unbolt all visible connections to the transmission.
  11. Jack up car as well as place jackst as well as s. Go under.
  12. Remove exhaust pipe connections. Remove starter.
  13. Loosen transmission connections at the crossmember.
  14. Unbolt all the other transmission connections to the motor.
  15. Unbolt motor mount connection.
  16. Get out from under, let the car down.
  17. Bring up the hoist, as well as connect the chains to the biggest bolts.
  18. Hoist slow. Adjust chains to lift front higher.
  19. Swing motor free of car to avoid hitting the car.
  20. Bring up truck or SUV. Put the old motor in.
  21. Installation is the reverse.
  22. See extra instructions: distributor removal as well as timing, valve adjustment, clutch replacemnent.
