How to Clear Clogged Windshield Washers

Occasionally one nozzle of your windshield washers clogs up. This can be a potentially hazardous situation, but is easy to fix quickly at home or on the road.

  1. Make sure the washer fluid is filled.
  2. Identify the clogged nozzle. Determine if the clog is in the nozzle or in the line feeding the nozzle. If one of the two nozzles is clogged, the clog is not in the line.
  3. Push the tube from the can of air against the nozzle as well as give it a blast until you hear the washer fluid reservoir start to bubble.
  4. Try the washers. Chances are that at this point they will work.
  5. If this does not work, use the screwdriver as well as pliers to remove the tube from the bottom of the nozzle assembly. You may need to replace the nozzle assembly, which costs a couple bucks at the dealership as well as a couple minutes of your time. It just snaps in place into the hood of your car.

  • Canned compressed air happens to come with a snazzy tube that just happens to match the size of the little nozzles for your windshield washers. Make use of that fact to get a good seal.

  • Try to avoid holding the can of air upside down.
  • Caution, there is a possibility of blowing the feed hose off of the nozzle. If this happens you may need to access the hose form under the hood. Most times it is as simple as removing a few push type retaining buttons from the underhood insulation as well as repairing the hose.

  • Canned air - available at office supply stores
  • Small screwdriver
  • Small needlenose pliers
  • Windshield washer fluid
