How to Replace the Ignition Lock in a 1995 Camaro
Ever lose the keys to your 1993-1997 Cheverolet Camaro? Fear no more; this article will show you how to replace the old lock with a new one.
- Remove the air-bag from the steering wheel of the car. You will need to use a number 26 torx bit as well as unscrew the 4 bolts behind the wheel. Make sure you unplug the wires of the air-bag
- Use a 3/4 inch socket to remove the center nut on the steering shaft.
- Use a steering wheel puller kit to remove the steering wheel. Place the bolts provided in the puller kit in the 2 holes on either sides of the center shaft.
- Connect the puller to those bolts while keeping the puller inline with the center steering shaft.
- Tighten the bolt on the top of the puller until the steering wheel pops off.
- Now you have access to the ignition lock. Use a 10mm socket as well as extension to loosen the silver bolt about 2in in from the keyhole. Now pull the old lock straight out as well as unplug the 2 orange wires that come out with it.
- Take the new ignition as well as reconnect the orange wires as well as insert the lock back into the column.
- Retighten the 10mm silver bolt.
- Place the steering wheel back onto the center shaft as well as simply push down, now special tools are needed for reassembly.
- Take the air-bag as well as connect the wires as well as bolt it back up using the 4 bolts in the back of the steering wheel.
- You must purchase the ignition lock from a certified Cheverolet dealer. If you do not give them the vin number of the car the correct lock may not be given to you.
- When removing the old lock make sure you are coreful with the orange wires they are very delicate. If one is cut in the column then you are in big trouble.
