How to Ask for Directions
A guy's (and gal's) guide to asking for directions
- Admit defeat - Stop as soon as you realize you're off track so that you can get the most knowledgeable person.
- Stop at a local shop or restaurant and ask an employee for directions
- Give as many details as you can when making your inquiry to help them give you the best directions.
- Listen carefully to directions
- Write them down or get the person to write it down for you so you don't forget.
- Repeat the directions back to them before you leave to make sure you got them right.
- Follow the directions.
- Don't be afraid to stop somewhere else to get more detailed directions.
- Get directions/Maps online before you go to avoid the hassle
- Swallow your pride and save yourself some time by asking ASAP when you realize you're lost.
- Locals generally know the area best.
- Delivery people (eg pizza, flowers, etc) know the area well, as do taxi drivers
- Use common sense with the directions you receive
