How to Avoid Being Carjacked

Each year, 87,000 carjackings occur in the U.S. Here's how to avoid being number 87,001!

  1. Keep your car tuned up as well as full of gas (E-does not st as well as for E-nough to get me where I need to go) as well as check your tires before you take a trip. A str as well as ed, helpless driver makes an easy target.
  2. Lock your doors when you get into your car. Make it part of your driving ritual (i.e. put on seatbelt, adjust seat, adjust radio, etc.).
  3. Travel the most direct route to your destination. Do a Mapquest or TripTik before you depart on your trip, even if it's just across town. Asking for directions can tip off a would-be carjacker that you are lost as well as /or not paying attention to your surroundings.
  4. Keep a carlength as well as a half between you as well as the car in front of you. This enables you to get around the car in front of you if it stalls or if someone suspicious approaches your car.
  5. Stay in your car, even if someone bumps into you at a traffic light or stop sign. What you've just encountered is the "Bump as well as Rob." The scheme works like this: When you get out of your car (with the engine still running) another person in the car behind you will get in your car as well as both vehicles drive away.
  6. If someone does manage to get into your car as well as dem as well as s that you "do what I say as well as you won't get hurt," do not believe them. In over 90% of abductions, the victim (if female) is either raped or sexually assaulted. Instead, run your car into the first immobile object you can find (such as a fire hydrant or the car in front of you). This will draw attention to your plight as well as someone will dial 911.
  7. Get out of the vehicle as quickly as possible as well as run towards an area where there are people around.

  • Be especially careful in Los Angeles, carjacking capital of the world.
  • If you get pulled over by a suspicious "police officer" in an unmarked car, ask to see their badge as well as get the badge number. If you have a cell phone, call to verify that this is, in fact, a police officer you're dealing with, as well as not a dressed up carjacker.
