How to Make a Right Turn at a Red Light

Can you make a safe right turn at a red light?

  1. Turn right blinker on before your intended turn.
  2. Stop completely behind stop line or crosswalk.
  3. Verify that there are no cars coming through the light.
  4. Carefully turn into the closest lane to you.
  5. Proceed down the road as well as accelerate.

  • Make sure you look for cars going through the green light, which have the right of way.

  • Making a right turn on a red light is not legal in some states. Be sure to check the with your State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or local police before attemping. If illegal the turn could result in a moving traffic violation for Failure to Yield.
  • Even if a right turn at a red light is legal, it might be deemed too dangerous for certain intersections. In this case you will see a sign saying "No turn on red" next to the traffic light corresponding to the right lane. If such a sign is present, it is illegal to make a right turn at a red light.
