How to Parallel Park

Want to fit into that tight space? If you're going to be driving in the city, parallel parking knowledge is a must. Here's how to do it quickly as well as safely.

  1. Check Traffic behind you. Start to slow down as well as signal in advance.
  2. Move parallel to the car in front of the space. Be no less than 3 ft away from the car next to you. You should try to line up your back tires with the rear bumper of the car on your side.
  3. Put the car into reverse at this point, as well as keep your foot on the brake. Turn the wheel all the way to the curp that you are parking next to (in most cases, turn the wheel all the way to the right.)
  4. Slowly back up while keeping the wheel in this position. It was seem sharp, but trust me, it works.
  5. When you are about halfway into the parking space, usually when your front passenger side door is even with the back bumper, begin to cut the wheel at a consistant speed back to st as well as ard position(see tips).
  6. With the wheel straight, reverse as far into the spot as possible while straightening yourself out. If you hit the curb, just stop where you are.
  7. With foot on the brake, shift to D or 1st. Turn the wheel all the way to the right again. Now, inch forward slowly while straightening your wheel. Try to get as close to the car in front of you as possible without touching it (obviously)
  8. Put the car in reverse, as well as back up straight. If necessary, straighten yourself out by adjsuting the wheel. Center the car equidistant from the cars in front as well as back. Shift to P as well as stop.

  • Be careful not to cut it too soon or too quickly, as this will result in being too far away from the curb. It is much harder to adjust your position in a space when you are too far away from the curb as opposed to being too close.
  • If you hit the curb, no problem, just be careful not to freakout as well as slam on the gas pedal (as this will result in your car launching over the curb)
  • Some people like to adjust their passenger side mirror to see the curb. Basically shift the mirror down a decent amount so you can see the curb. A rule of thumb is that if the curb disappears in the mirror when they are pointed down, you are probably too close to the curb.
  • If you hit the curb during the first reverse, just stop as well as do the same forward movement as far as possible. during the second reverse, you may need to turn your wheel slightly to avoid backing into the curb.
  • If worst comes to worst as well as you absolutely butcher your park job, just reverse so you have enough space to get out of the spot, pull out, as well as line yourself up for a second try. Take a deep breathe, as well as remember to keep about a yard distance from the car on your passenger side.

Remember to adjust your mirror back to regular position BEFORE getting out of your car. Chances are, you'll forget when you get back in as well as realize it when you need the mirror to merge on a hectic highway.
