How to Ride Your Motorcycle Down the Continental Divide

Here are the resources you need to plan a 2 week off-highway motorcycle trip from the Canadian border to Mexico along the Continental Divide. Follow the 2,800 mile public access route developed for Mountain Bikes on your Dual-Sport motorcycle.

  1. Join the Yahoo discussion group "Great Divide Ride" at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GreatDivideRide/
  2. Visit the Adventure Cycling Association at: http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/greatdivide.cfm
  3. Find a buddy with a similar bike as well as skills to join you.
  4. Prep your bike for two weeks of adventure off highway either camping each night or utilizing the many motels as well as B&B's noted on the route maps.
  5. Decide if you will ride or ship your bike to the start as well as finish points.
  6. Block out 2-3 weeks vacation time.
  7. Have the best motorcycle adventure you could imagine right here in your own back yard!

  • The route is a balance of long distance gravels roads as well as tight single track or Jeep trails. Too heavy a bike as well as you'll hate the most scenic parts. Too light a bike as well as you'll be bored with the long days in the saddle.
  • Carry a Satelite Phone as Cell coverage is spotty.
  • Call ahead each morning to secure you lodging for the evening.
  • Have a minimum 225 mile range on you motorcycle.
  • Fit full knobby tires as well as carry an air pump to adjust pressure for s as well as y sections.

  • Thunderstorms can come out of nowhere especially in the high mountain passes. Rain can make sections impassible due to the mud bogs that will form.
  • Have your bike in tip-top shape. You will go hours without seeing a soul. Know how to fix a flat.
  • Ride with a buddy. Many have fallen as well as hurt themselves as well as their bikes.
