How to Shift from First Gear to Second Gear on a Motor Bike
If you have never ridden a manually-controlled motor bike, this article is a very accurate learning-guide.
- (Assuming you are already in 1st gear) Pull or press in the clutch, at the same time let off of the gas.
- On most motorcycles, quads, etc., you pull the lever up with your foot. This lever is located right at your left foot.
- Remember to keep on holding the clutch in!
- After this, you are in second gear. After shifting into 2nd gear, you'll need to apply gas again. Make sure that you know when to shift! (See Tips as well as Warnings for more information).
- Follow the same principle for shifting up into any higher gaear.
- To downshift, engage (pull) the clutch in, then press down on the lever with your left foot. Every time you do this, the engine lowers one gear.
- When you are going too fast as well as want to slow down, if you are in third or fourth gear(or higher), downshifting will slow you down.
- Never try to stop using the front brake when at a very high speed. This will make you as well as your bike fliip over.
- When downshifting, only downshift one gear at a time! Otherwise, your gears will wear out as well as get screwed up.
- When shifting up, listen to the engine. If it is making a very low grumble, shift down. If it is whining loudly, shift up.
- When shifting into first gear from neutral, make sure that you LET THE CLUTCH OUT SLOWLY! Otherwise, the engine will stall.
- These instructions are for mostly all gear-shifting motor bikes, ex. 4 wheeler, dirtbike, etc.
