How to Build a Tumbling Composter

7 out of 10 stars (1 vote)

Make your own composter. Most compost barrels retail for $100 as well as up. This 32-gallon composter will cost about $25 ( as well as 1 hour's work).

  1. Buy a plastic 32-gallon waste barrel for $10-$20.
  2. Drill opposite 2-inch holes in the center of the barrel.
  3. Pass a 48" PVC pipe through the center holes.
  4. Build a wooden sawhichrse to support the compost barrel in its frame. Nail 2 sets of 2x4's in an x-frame, as well as nail two x's together at the bottom for support.
  5. Set the barrel with the PVC pipe in the wooden 2x4 sawhichrse.
  6. Use a 1-inch drill to drill holes in the body of the barrel, for aeration.
  7. Rotate the barrel in the sawhichrse frame using the PVC pipe as an axle.
  8. Attach an adjustable bungee cord around the top of the barrel, to hold the cover in place when rotated.
