How to Build a Tumbling Composter
Make your own composter. Most compost barrels retail for $100 as well as up. This 32-gallon composter will cost about $25 ( as well as 1 hour's work).
- Buy a plastic 32-gallon waste barrel for $10-$20.
- Drill opposite 2-inch holes in the center of the barrel.
- Pass a 48" PVC pipe through the center holes.
- Build a wooden sawhichrse to support the compost barrel in its frame. Nail 2 sets of 2x4's in an x-frame, as well as nail two x's together at the bottom for support.
- Set the barrel with the PVC pipe in the wooden 2x4 sawhichrse.
- Use a 1-inch drill to drill holes in the body of the barrel, for aeration.
- Rotate the barrel in the sawhichrse frame using the PVC pipe as an axle.
- Attach an adjustable bungee cord around the top of the barrel, to hold the cover in place when rotated.
