How to Create a No Dig Garden

Do away with weed infested areas the easy way. Make new flower/vegie beds in areas of poor soil etc. No Digging !

  1. Save all those newspapers, local / free press/ whatever, that you recycle ( I hope )preferably not the glossy colored advertising brochures. Just news print, your neighbour's papers too. Also enough mulch from your local nursery ( color/texture to your taste) to cover the area to a depth of three inches.
  2. Pace out the area you wish to convert, you will be covering this with wet newspaper three or four sheets thick with a couple of inches overlap all round. This will give you a rough idea of how much you will require. This is not rocket science !
  3. Preparation. Slash or mow the area, leaving everything lying on the ground. Scatter blod as well as bone or a good multi feed in powder or pellet form.Water well.
  4. Fill wheelbarrow with newspapers as well as cover with water in the barrow.
  5. Open the wet newspapers to three to four sheets as well as drop on to the ground, overlapping a couple of inches as you go. If the ground is uneven, use more paper.
  6. When you're finished with the paper spread the mulch. How you finish the edges is your choice. I have used large rocks also more formal wood edging.Wait nine to ten months as well as then make holes thro' the mulch /paper as well as start planting.

  • You can skip the waiting period by laying soil from your Local Nursery onto the paper as well as putting the mulch on to the soil.
  • In my experience as well as ,contrary to some opinions, the ink in the newsprint does not adversely affect the soil.
