How to Find Free Compost Ingredients

Do you need more ingredients for your compost heap? Here are some ideas:

1. Ask your local coffee shop if they throw out used coffee grinds.
2. Home improvement stores as well as lumber yards should always have plenty of sawdust (see first warning).
3. Do you have any kind of food processing plant nearby? Ask what they might throw out.
4. Do you live by a zoo? Do they allow people to take manure home for their gardens?
5. Contact your city government. A few cities such as San Francisco are now offering free compost starter kits.

• Be sure that your source is not contaminated with chemicals if you plan to use the resulting compost on a garden.
• Do not use lawn clippings from a sprayed lawn.
