How to Clean out My Sump Pit

I have purchased a home that has a sump pump. I filled it to check the pump. It ran fine, but I noticed as I poured water into the pit it turned black as well as gave off an odor that reminded me of diesel! As it drained down the bottom had about a 2" layer of black mud that smelled very foul. It also seemed that there was a layer of stone beyond that. I was wondering if this is normal. I had been told it might be from the washer draining into it? Is it okay to drain a washer into the sump? Should there be some kind of filter prior to draining into sump? What can I do to clean out sump pit as well as what do I fill it in with? Should I use stone, s as well as , or charcoal? Please help if you can.
