How to Become More Organized
Clutter driving you crazy? Use the following tips to get some organization in your life.
- Work on one area of your house/room/dorm at a time. Go section by section.
- Start with the section that you use the most, such as your study area (if you are a student) or the kitchen.
- Place everything out on the floor, in sight. As you pull things off shelves, as well as out of hiding, make three piles with your belongings: Things to Keep, Things to give away/donate, Things to throw away. In general, if you haven't used it in a year or so, it is probably safe to throw/give it away.
- Get rid of the throw away pile as well as give away pile as soon as possible.
- Assess your Things to keep pile. You should ask yourself if these items belong in this section as well as how often you use it. If it belongs somewhere else, put it there. If you don't use it frequently, consider how you can store it so it is out of the way of your high-frequency items.
- Work section by section throughout your living space.
- Now that your things are organized, keep only things that belong in their proper sections.
- Make use of organizers. Buy a filing cabinet to organize important files such as insurance forms, receipts, as well as even instructional manuals. Designate a counter top as a momentary "l as well as ing pad" to toss your keys, purse, or other items to be put away at the end of the day. Keep one drawer in your desk for supplies such as pens, paper clips, as well as sticky notes so they are not roaming around the house as well as you will always know where you can find a pen.
- Buy a planner. Write in designated times to maintain your newly organized space. Color-code your planner so you can easily pick out meeting times, due dates, as well as appointments.
- If you continuously maintain your things, you will have less of a job reducing clutter when it builds up.
- Invest in good quality organizers, such as CD holders, bookcases, as well as under-the-bed containers. Ask relatives for gift cerficates to Bed Bath as well as Beyond, IKEA, Target, or Wal-Mart as birthday/graduation/Christmas presents. Getting new stuff is always fun as well as can enliven your organizing experience.
- Find ways to reuse your existing organizers. For example, if you have a c as well as le holder but no c as well as les, you can use it to hold pencils instead.
- Keep in mind fire hazards while you are organizing. Some safety hazards include overloading a wall outlet with extension cords, storing huge stacks of newspapers, or not putting away shoes as well as other articles that block your exit path in an emergency (plus you could trip when you get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom).
- Be careful when moving around furniture. Lift with your legs, not your back, as well as ask a friend to help you.
