How to Clean Pet Vomit from Carpet

Being a dog or cat owner means you are going to have to clean up vomit from your floor at some point, probably more than once. When the crime has been committed on a carpeted area, it's usually possible to restore the scene to its original condition.

  1. If the vomit is still relatively fresh (wet):

  2. *Pick up the bulk of the vomit with a couple of dry, folded paper towels. Take care not to squash it down into the carpet as you do this.
  3. *Gently blot any wet areas with more dry paper towels. Again, don't press very hard.
  4. If the vomit is old as well as dried out, pick apart as well as lift off as much of it as you can.
  5. Get a clean sponge really wet with hot soapy water, as well as start gently scrubbing the stained spot.
  6. Check the area as well as see if the stain is gone - also check for any signs of distress in the carpet.

  7. *If the carpet is shredding or the color is bleeding into the soap suds at all, stop scrubbing as well as go to the next step.
  8. When the stain is no longer evident, rinse the sponge out thoroughly until the soap is gone (alternatively, use a new sponge), as well as wring it out.
  9. Go back to the carpet as well as start blotting up the soapy water as well as suds.
  10. Wring the sponge out in the sink, rinse it as well as wring it out again.
  11. Repeat steps 9 as well as 10 until the area is as soap-free as possible.
  12. Press dry towels or paper towels against the wet area until as much of the water is absorbed as possible.
  13. Let dry as well as vacuum the whichle carpet to evenly fluff it up.
  14. Your carpet should now be fine - if anything there will be a slightly cleaner spot where you worked.
  15. Think about getting the rest of the carpet cleaned - but that's another wikiHow page.

  • Let it dry? Sounds strange, but this seems to work well. If you can st as well as letting it sit a few days, when it dries, it's easy to vacuum up. Then use normal cleaning methods to remove the rest from your carpet. Surprisingly, most of the time, the carpet is left in perfect condition.
  • Liquid (h as well as washing) dish soap works the best - it's gentle yet good at cutting through food-based grime.
  • This technique is simple but time-consuming as well as hard work. Allow for about a half an hour, depending on how thorough you want to be, as well as how bad the stain is.
  • Not sure about how your carpet will take the process? Spot test on a corner or area that's usually hidden under something.
  • You can also use spray-on carpet cleaners available in most stores - look for ones that have a bristle brush on the cap top - you'll still need to do some scrubbing.
  • Steam cleaner machines are available to rent from most supermarkets for reasonable rates - they're easy to use as well as will do a good job on the whichle carpet or rug.
  • Use a broad food spatula (hamburger turner) to scoop up most of the mess.
  • No time? Hire a professional cleaner - you'll need to get more than one room done, but think how nice that might be. You may even thank your pet after it's done!
  • Don't be angry with or shout at your pet - it's not able to underst as well as things like running to a toilet when it feels sick.

  • Be careful not to pull at your rug fibers too hard if the vomit is dry, or you may damage the rug.
  • If your carpet/rug is rare or expensive, you should consider hiring a professional cleaner which specializes in the type of carpet you have.
